I’m so delighted you’re joining me here at Yoga Dear. What first began as solely a vision for a brick + mortar yoga studio, is now an online space devoted to connection, curiosity, growth, and honesty.
Here, I focus on bringing you grounded guidance in yogic philosophy...something I feel is being lost in yoga practices of the West. I do that by sharing real stories from my own life as a teacher, student, mother, wife, and HUMAN with hopes that you’ll see how messy living your yoga can really be.
Why? Because of my own path to the practice. I did not come for the philosophy at first. I came because I was struggling with severe anxiety, and a need to white knuckle my life and control everything. I came because I was stressed out in my mid-twenties, trying to deal with the inner pain by running miles and miles every other day [side note: that did not work]. But, it wasn’t until I was 27, trying to get pregnant, and experiencing infertility that I realized something was missing from my practice. Ahem...it was the practice itself - the ways of living, the principles, the technology to learn how to accept my whole being. We call this the 8-Limbed Path of yoga.
Through 2.5 years of unexplained infertility and something called Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, I sought yoga philosophy to heal my body and my heart. When I look back now, I know I opened a yoga studio and started our newsletter to share these teachings with others.
While yoga philosophy applies to everyone, I share a particular interest in helping women reconnect with their bodies and nourish their souls. I work with those experiencing infertility, I educate about fertility (the other “f” word), I assist women during pregnancy, and their healing postpartum. I believe surpassingly in the power of yoga to transform the way we live in our bodies, and ultimately our lives. I believe we teach what we need to know. Thank you for being here.
The Yoga Dear Manifesto:
Yoga Dear is a welcoming, encouraging approach to yoga, offering grounded guidance in yoga philosophy with a particular emphasis on supporting women. Here, we share stories, knowledge, and create experiences that are down-to-earth with a healthy dose of laughter.
Our greatest hope? That everyone who winds up here experiences a sense of feeling seen, heard, and like they truly matter—because they do. We’re here for anyone who needs regular reminder that “You are enough.” Yes, you.
We believe practicing yoga is a way of practicing life. We know that each time we step onto the mat, whether it’s the first time or the thousandth, we’re learning about how to both push our limits and respect our boundaries. We’re balancing patience and determination and developing connection, while making space for stillness. We recognize that time for stillness, acceptance, and self-study is crucial during preconception, pregnancy, and later postpartum.
We invite you to explore possibilities that you didn’t know were available. As a result, you might discover that you have a calmer mind and a calmer life. You might find that courage on the mat leads to courage off the mat. You just might find yourself not judging, analyzing, or comparing. We hope you find yourself more connected to the person you’ve always been.
Leanne Matullo is a Registered Yoga Teacher, Registered Pre/Postnatal Yoga Teacher, yoga school and studio founder. She believes surpassingly in the power of yoga, particularly the philosophy, to transform the way we live in our bodies and ultimately our lives.
Leanne is a lifelong dancer and yogi, combining an array of disciplines and styles to bring to her readers + clients. She draws on her dance background to teach classes that are as elegant as they are encouraging. She pulls from a former career in career counseling to guide students towards a deeper understanding of the individual “Self.”
Leanne intimately knows the benefits that yoga can bring, as she learned during her fertility struggles. It taught her that women need a place of safety and welcoming during the childbearing years, no matter their parental status, so she created that in Yoga Dear. Here, women have a place to reconnect with their bodies and nourish their souls.
Leanne is, at her core, a person of warmth and inclusion. She loves to know students, readers, and clients by name, and her nurturing spirit fosters a sense of vibrancy and community. E-RYT.
